I wanted this to be the first book that I read because it reminds me so much of my two boys. I did have to edit out and change some words to make it more age and time appropriate, but my boys loved it. How could they not love a book about two mischievous boys who get to make up there own rules, swim in the river, have stick fights, plot against bad guys, are on a search for treasure, and spend their days finding adventure. After reading it to them I might just start calling them Tom and Huck because it is hard to distinguish the differences. My boys wish they could spend their days doing those things and often they do.

New...My Special Collections

I am so excited to finally introduce you to a project that has been in the works for months. My husband’s profession is in special collections. For those that don’t quite know what that is; he archives old books, pictures, and documents. Yes, he loves his job! It also means that we have a great love for books in our family. I have been thinking of ways that I can capture this love along with my children’s curiosity, childhood, and special moments. With an idea from a friend I have started my own special collections. These are concept shoots that I am doing with my kids through children’s books. I am making collages/story boards of pictures with them and in the end am going to make an album! EEEE! It is so exciting. To introduce the concept we did this shoot and I fell even more in love! Let me know what you guys think. Also, I would love to hear what your favorite children's book as a kid was or a favorite you read to your kids now.

and a wonderful dinner!

It was a great day and we were having so much fun that these pictures ended up getting squeezed in. I originally wanted to do them at this cute little location, but by the time we got to them it was dark. So, we did this instead! In the end I think that they ended up loving it!

I think Spring may finally be here. Spring is my favorite!

I love the sun peaking through the clouds after a winter of darkness.

I love to watch the peaks of flowers breaking through the dirt.

I love the breeze on my feet as I am finally able to wear sandals.

I love the sound of rain as it pours down on the roof.

I love all of the brightness that flowers bring into all the brown.

Spring, I love your warmth, I love your smell, and above all I love the newness that you bring into my soul.

One year older...

Oh, birthdays, they seem so bitter sweet to me. Who really wants to be older? This year was full of so many things; goodbye's, road trips, moving, change, new beginnings, trials, learning, and growing. It has been one hard year, but I am so thankful for the strength it has given me. There are many tough choices for this year as well. Here is hoping this year treats me well :) Goodbye 26. Hello 27!

Bear Lake Utah

Oh, how I miss you, Bear Lake! This is a favorite spot for my family. When we wanted a refuge from things that were going on in our crazy lives, or a time to regroup as a family, this is where we would go. Looking at these pictures I can see my husband playing in the water with my kids, I feel the sun shining and the wind whipping my hair around, I can hear my children giggling, and I can taste the yummy picnic food. Oh, how I miss you and the warmth that you brought me.

Since it is getting so cold I thought I would post a beach session. Maybe we can all stare at these pictures and think warm thoughts! Then we will be warm :) Do you think that it will work? All kidding aside, this family is my in-laws. We love them and miss them like C.R.A.Z.Y. My little "E" is always asking when she can see her "M". Every time we go to the store she wants to buy her a present and send it to her. Makes my heart hurt. Hopefully they will see each other before they forget all the good times. That will be such a fun reunion. Can't wait. Until then I will stare at these pictures and wish that I could hear the two girls laughing and playing together.

I know that you are all eager for an update and I am can't wait to post about all of our adventures. The thing is, moving is hard and I feel like I have been running and haven't stopped since we have been here. No, but really, I have had a million projects and things to do. So, to tell you what I have been doing instead of blogging.

-Editing like a million pictures. Really, I can't wait to show you.
-Getting my kids caught up in school. Dang the schools out here are hard!
Doesn't help that they missed about two weeks before we even got here.
-Making a kitchen table. I know! I will post about it.
-Making my daughter a bed. You will think a was a carpenter not a photographer.
It was a dream of mine though and I wanted to make it a reality.
-Decorating my house. Ugh, I am not good at it.
-Learning where everything is. This town is a lot bigger than good ole' Logan.
Good thing we have a GPS.
-Finding things to eat. We have decided to eat way less meat at our house.
-Visiting the medical profession. I think we have almost bought or spot here as well.
We have already been to the doctor twice and the ER once.
-Taking my kids on bike rides and to the new park. It is too gorgeous not to.
-Unpacking!!! So, so, much more to do.
-Serving in my new calling.
Yes, I was called to serve in the Young Womens Organization for my church.
-Attending tons of dinners with new friends. Thanks for welcoming us!!!
No, but, really I feel lonely out here.
-Comforting my kids that new friends are good. (We all our really missing our old ones though.) Seriously, I have lost count of how many times that my little princess has cried wanting her old friends.

So, thanks for bearing with me. Today I am off to...stain a bench, take care of my sick kiddos, find my in-laws a hotel to stay at while we go in to DC, do 15 million loads of laundry, finish decorating and getting costumes for Halloween (I still have a week, right?), read to my kids, get O from the bus stop, edit more pictures, and start cleaning my garage. Whew!

And, because they was way too much text in this post. Here is a pie that I made from scratch with the Young Women last night. Mmmm it is so good.

Moving

Really, sorry for the lack of post. I have many things to show you, but I am up to my eyeballs in boxes. So, yep, you heard that right...we are moving. We leave in less than two weeks!!! Now are you wondering where we are going? Well, we are going to Harrisonburg, Virginia. I know-it is far! We will miss our friends and family here, but are excited for the next chapter. Thank you to all of you who have let me take pictures of your families. It really was my pleasure. Hopefully I will get to post more before I go, but if not I for sure will when I get there. How I love these pictures! These were taken by my good friend Kellee Smith and edited by myself. I have wanted to do pictures of my gorgeous daughter and myself for a long time and I am so lucky that Kellee could capture what I pictured in my head. I cannot tell you how important it is that you capture these moments with your children. We all have reasons that we don't want to be in pictures, but I know that I will treasure these forever! The other ones were Kellee's idea and I love them too. Those are my kids clothes when they were babies and all my girls favorite dolls. I have such a fun life and so many new things are coming. My husband graduated with his masters degree and we couldn't be more proud of him. He worked his little tail off! We are now no longer students. Yes, it feels so good! We went out to California to attend commencement and have a little vacation. It was so much fun, but now we are home and back to work. My husband has begun job searching which is a lot of work. That also means that my husband has been out of town a lot. So, for the next while I may be a little sporadic with postings. I also have some fun new projects that I am working on. So grateful for my little family and the blessings that they are. Here is a tidbit into our life...

Don't you just love the warm weather that we are having today? It is the best! I love/love/love spring. Seriously, it is my favorite season and I hope that it is here to stay for a while. Did you guys miss me? I know I have been gone for a bit. That is what Spring Break, birthdays, and being sick will do to ya. I am now recovering from all of the fun and being sick....there will be many posts to come. Are you excited? I am!!! The first on the docket is this wonderful and super nice family. They got sealed in the temple and asked me to come and take a few pictures for them to remember their special day. WPPI Recap...

Most of you already know, but for those that don't I had the privilege of going to the WPPI Conference a few weeks ago. WPPI stands for Wedding & Portrait Photographers International. The annual conference, held in Las Vegas, is a great learning opportunity for photographers. They have classes, parties, shoots, and many opportunities to grow. I left feeling like I have been stretched as a photographer and much more as a person. Truly it was an amazing experience for me! I learned so much and came back completely inspired and ready to get to work! As a have been reflecting on my experience that was WPPI 2010 I want to share some of my thoughts and mainly thank you's to you all...

To the presenters: Jasmine Star, Audrey Woulard, Tamara Lackey, Elizabeth Messina, Canfield Jenkins, and Brianna Graham. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! These photographers are amazing! I am grateful for your classes. I am inspired because of you! I appreciate your willingness to share your journey and things that work for you. I admire your hard work and passion for this industry. I was blessed to be able to meet many of you. I was literally soaking up your words and am excited to implement them! You made me laugh and you made me cry, but what I love about all of you is that you made me remember who I am and why I do what I do!

To my industry friends/photographers/vendors....I want to thank you! I came home feeling so blessed because the people that you are. I am so proud to be part of a community that we make fun and that we care about each other!!! I am so incredibly appreciative of the connections that we have made. You have given me so many opportunities! I thank you for the insight, the fun, the craziness, the connections, the comradery, the listening ear, and most importantly the friendships that will last forever. I can't wait until next year!!! I have to give specific shout outs….one to Kellee Smith (a fellow photographer and friend)….she knows why!!! hehe We had a blast. Thank you for all of your support and believing in me. These are the others groups from my shoot in Vegas. This boy was so fun. He told us he couldn't sing and then when we were almost done he starting singing this totally funny song. It was awesome and he can sing! The couple was just so nice. The girl hiked up that terrain in heels and not once complained about it. Also, it was actually cold there and these guys stuck it out. I meet them many years ago and then we moved and lost touch.

Then a few years ago they moved by us and I was so glad.

As I have been reflecting on the past year...

where I have been, what I have done and what I haven't...

I have been thinking a lot about where I am at and where I want to be.

Well, my website falls into the category of where I dont want to be.

I have come to the fact that blogs make you

vulnerable..

which can be a positive and a negative thing,

but as most of you know I am not that eloquent in expressing

what is in my head

and I have never wanted

haters:( You all know that they are out there---

Well, I have been inspired by some amazing people and using one of them's words...I want to "keep it real".

I originally started showing my work and writing about it for a few reasons...

show others the amazing people that I get to photograph and to show others my journey.

I want to go back to that; even if it makes me vulnerable.

So, you are going to see a lot of

changes

around here!!!! You are going to hear my mistakes and see my triumphs. Photography is a lot harder then people think it is. To make a portrait is more than just taking pictures with a nice camera. There are many goals that I am working on and I am going to have some fabulous opportunities

to help me meet them. I hope that you all may enjoy what is coming up and I hope that I may be able to through my pictures...

In light of this...where have I been?

Well, sick and stressed is the answer to that.

My family has been sick a lot. Time of the year I guess.

Happy to say that we are all better!

Now for the stress....my darling and wonderful husband had his last semester of his masters.

I am happy to say that he got it done and we are no longer students! YAY!

That also means that we are now looking for employment elsewhere.

Yes, that does mean that we will be moving sometime. An exciting change for us.

I will keep you all updated!

This is my childhood friend. Isn't she gorgeous!?! She needed some quick pictures for work and who else would she called but me. We had such a fun time and were talking so much I forgot I was actually supposed to be taking pictures. We had such a blast back in the day. It was fun reminiscing about wearing her great pajama pants (MC hammer style-they were awesome) eating donuts, and watching Mad TV! Now we are "grown ups" and it is great to see that we have come so far! She is working at an awesome company and just bought a Condo. I am so proud of her!

Hello all, I am back. I know I have probably lost all of my followers. I hope that you will all come back to me :) I have been doing photo sessions, but I took some time away from blogging to spend time with my adorable kids. My boys started kindergarten this year. I know I can't believe that they are that old either! Before school started I decided that I wanted to spend every last minute with them and so I did. We had a blast! Such a fun summer and spending it with the ones that I love. I don't know how we are going to top it! Now I am back to working my tail off while they are in school. I have many sessions to blog to show you all what I have been doing. I am going to start with my fantastic kids. Seriously, I love this monkeys so much. She was born under 5 pounds and even though we had to wait a little while for her session, she was so good! Her family is so cute and I can just see the joy radiate off of them. I have to first start off by saying that I normally do not shoot weddings. I will however, do it under special circumstances or if I am assisting another photographer. In this case it was the later. I love the opportunity to shoot with other photographers and specially wedding photogs because I admire them so much. Thanks to all those photographers that have given me the chance to do this! This past week has been such a blast! I hope you all enjoyed your Holiday weekend. I love this country that we live in!!! I had so much fun last week, I think that I need this week to catch up on all my sleep and editing. Those that are waiting for pictures thanks for being patient and I am going to try my hardest to get everything done. Watch for post...I think there may be one everyone day this week! I know, it has been busy around here.

To get to the pictures...this family was a referral and I was so excited to take pictures for them. The were the funnest kids and so polite. Seriously! My kids could take some lessons from them. All of them were so nice and did great for their pictures. We even joked around and they cracked me up. It was so much fun! Thanks again for letting me take them!

As most of you have noticed I have been MIA lately. Well, that it because I took some time off! Well, I really can't get time off, but I didn't take any sessions. I was feeling like I was in one of those money machines. You know the ones where the money is swirling around you and your are grabbing as fast as you can, but really just going crazy. Well that has been me the last couple of weeks, except in my life it wasn't money, it was to do lists. I know not as fun! I have spent time organizing things and spending some much needing time with my kids and husband. I have loved every minute of it and am now ready to get back! This weekend I will be will family again, but next week watch for post! Also, I have a few spots open at the end of June, so if you are wanting a session email me. Thanks everybody!!!

This girl was the sweetest little thing! She was so quiet which is different for me...my kids are never quiet :) We did get her talking a little towards the end and I am glad that she liked me toy frog. It is good to be back! I have some fabulous shoots to show you and I am trying to get them edited as fast as my tired self can go. Thanks again everyone for the love that you have sent! This family was referred by one of my favorite families. I knew that they were going to be great to photograph and they meet that expectation! They are so cute and were so ready for their session. The weather was wonderful! It did start sprinkling on us, but stopped, so we could get more pictures. I was so glad! Their little girl is such a princess and made me wish my girl was just as little. Fabulous...that is the one word that I use to describe this shoot. It was wonderful. This girl was up for anything! She was moving and we did this shoot the last day that she was here. I am glad that we were able to get her in. I loved every minute of it and we got to go to some cool locations (thanks A). Be prepared for a ton of images, I had a hard time just picking a few. Another fabulous shoot!!! I got the privilege of going with Kellee again and I took a few pictures. This couple is so fun. The are never going to be bored and are going to have such a fun marriage! I was laughing so hard because of them and because of Kellee. She did scare me to death, but I am glad that everything was alright. Thanks again for letting me come ;)

What a blast!!! Really there is no other way to describe this session. I loved it!!! Outside, warm weather, and fun people...there isn't really more that I could have asked for. This family is so incredibly amazing! My family is really blessed to know these guys. Seriously!!! (I know that they are shaking their heads reading this :) When they first got to the location they both said that they are not photogenic. I told them that I didn't believe them and that I was going to prove them wrong. I think I did and their little boy is the cutest! Oh also, thanks so much for the gift!

So, I have to start first by saying that I normally do not do this type of photography. It was so much fun and I learned a ton. I shot these pictures for a friend. The theme of the luau was voyage. There were dances from Hawaii, Fiji, Tahiti, New Zealand, Tonga, and Samoa. They did such a great job.

This shoot was sooo dang fun!!! I got the privilege to shoot alongside an amazing photographer!!! Kellee from MBK wanted someone to help her out with a shoot and of course I said yes!!! Go check out her amazing work here and feel free to leave a comment. She really is incredible, I know! I try not to show it, but right along with my clients I am nervous for every shoot and post on the blog. I want to be able to offer perfection and this shoot was no exception. I felt like it was time for the big dance and I had two left feet. Kellee was so gracious and welcoming, but I still felt like I was going to throw up. No kidding! She would ask me things and I would just go blank. Hopefully through it all I was able to get some good shots and it was great to hang out with Kellee. This bride was so fun and corky. She has such a personality and was constantly making us laugh. I don’t think her and her husband will ever be bored. It was a blast, I learned a ton, and I think I got some good shots. This movie is made by Zack Arias (an amazing photographer) and was done for Scott Kelby's blog. You can see the original here. It is inspiration for all of us, weather you are a photographer or not. Part of the things that I love about photography is that community that photographers are in. Most of the time we all want to support each other and help each other how ever we can. I am so appreciative of those that have helped me become better at this art!!! I hope we all continue supporting each other and I am excited to see what the future brings and continue my relationship with other photographers. Love ya all. Again, I am sorry for no posts. Everyone at my house has been terribly sick. We are still not better, but are starting to manage. This family and I have been waiting for the snow to do some fun and candid pictures. They are my neighbors so, last week when it was snowing they called me up and said lets go now. We had such a blast even though it was freezing and the snow was pounding down on us. This family is so fun and I hope that we captured that in their pictures. This little girl was so fun. Her dad and I go way back and we love their family. The first time we shot her pictures it didn't go so well and started raining on us, so we had to schedule a re-shoot. This time I went done to SLC to do these and the weather wasn't very good for us either. We were able to get some though and it was nice to spend time with her mom. This family is so fun and keeps you on your toes, you never know what you are going to get from them. We had to reschedule these guys session the first time and then the weather was awful the second time and it was a gloomy day, but we survived through it and got some good shots. Thanks for braving the cold guys! The little girl is so cute and smiley all the time, but you get a camera in front of her and she wants nothing to do with you. She made me work hard and my friend Ardis came along to do whatever she could to get her to look....thanks! I think we got some good ones of her looking. Crop Explained...

Sometimes people have problems and are confused when ordering prints due to cropping. Let me try and explain this using some illustrations.

When an image comes out of camera it is sized to a 4X6 ratio. So, you can get a picture size 4X6, 8X12, and 16 x24. Those are not very popular sizes and are hard to find frames for. So, when you try to crop to a different size you are going to loose some of the sides.

Here is an example…
This picture is a 4X6:

What are your options? We can use the image as it is and get an 8X12 picture….we already talked about the problems with that. Or we could crop it to a different size.

This pictures shows the different crop ratios.
The green line is a 4x6 or 8x12.
The blue line is a 5x7 or wallet size.
The red line is a 8X10.

So, say we want and 8x10. If we cropped it to that size then we are going to cut off some of her hand and her head, which is not going to give you the best picture possible. So, our options then are to add a border.

Now, most of the time I try to pay attention to different crop ratios and leave room, but when I am trying to chase a toddler or getting a specific image, I am more focused on the emotion and capturing that moment. Adding a border is a great way to get the size you want without loosing part of the picture!

My name is Randa Alvord. I am located in beautiful Cache County. First and foremost I am a wife and a mother. I live for my family. I have three adorable kiddos that you will probably see here often. My kids inspire me to be a better person and a better photographer. I love being able to freeze moments in time and have people treasure them. I am a perfectionist at heart, but I also like to have a lot of fun. I am a business person, but most of the time you will see me in flip flops and jeans. I received my Sociology degree from Utah State University. Through much determination I am a self-taught photographer and am skilled at Photoshop (I still have a lot to learn though.). I am rarely seen without my camera and am thankful for this gift I have been given. I look forward to the journeys ahead and would love to be able to capture your memories.
